Truth | Honor | Virtue

Each week in this new feature, we’ll be celebrating some of the great things our school community is doing!

Middle School Debate

Maddy Watabe and Lyla Jackson won 2nd place in Policy at the Cache Valley Clash tournament. This is especially remarkable considering Maddy and Lyla are the first Maeser team to compete in this event!

High School Debate

The following students have won in the tournaments listed below:

  • Norah Foster, 5th place in Spontaneous Argumentation at the Highland Mega-Novice Ram Jam Slam, 4th place in Novice Impromptu at Portia Douglas
  • Grant Scollick, 2nd place in Novice Lincoln-Douglas and Novice Impromptu at Panther Pride, 1st place in Novice Spontaneous Argumentation and 3rd place in Novice Impromptu at West Lake Thunderdome
  • Timothy Fang, 2nd place in OpenImpromptu at Portia Douglas

Middle School SOAR 8

The students in the class began the year saying how much they hate reading. This week they are all wanting me to read the novel they are reading and are beginning to exchange book titles with each other to read next. Thank you Emily for having reading a novel as an assignment.

National Honor Society

Congratulations to all high school students who were invited to apply to the National Honor Society. Those accepted will be inducted at a light reception held in their honor in the coming days. The Administration and Faculty commends each of you in your commitment to scholarship, leadership, service and character.

High School Math Team

Our High School Math team has already had three competitions. We are still waiting for results from the AMC 10/12 contest. In our Math League competitions, we are ranked 1st in the state of Utah and 18th in our region (which has schools from 13 different states)!

NEW Student Lottery Applications Are Now Open For 2022-23

Lottery applications for NEW students for the 2022-23 school year are NOW OPEN in our new online application/enrollment system!

To submit an application for a NEW student, click here to complete the Lottery Application. You can also access the lottery application by visiting our website (www.maeserprep.org) and clicking Admissions and then Submit An Application.

Applications must be received by February 1, 2022 to be included in the 2022-23 lottery. After that date, students will be added to the waitlist in the order their application is submitted.

Remember: DO NOT submit an online application for your CURRENT Maeser student — online applications are for NEW students only (that means new families & new incoming students of current families).

Because this is a brand new application/enrollment system, you will need to select “Create An Account”. (The application/enrollment system is different from your PowerSchool parent account.) You will continue to use the application/enrollment system account to submit additional applications for siblings (this year or in the future) and to enroll your student(s) if they receive an offer following our lottery. Please keep your login info handy.

If you have more than one NEW student applying for Maeser next year, you must submit a separate application for each new student.

REMEMBER: DO NOT submit an online application for your CURRENT Maeser student — online applications are for NEW students only.

If you have questions, please email our registrar at registrar@maeserprep.org.

Re-Enrollment For CURRENT Students Is Now Open For 2022-23

Re-enrollment for current Maeser studentswho will be returning for the 2022-23 school year is NOW OPEN with a brand-new online application/enrollment system accessible inside the PowerSchool parent portal!

Submit Your Current Student’s Re-Enrollment Application

Re-enrollment applications are now live inside the PowerSchool parent portal. Please check your email for detailed instructions on completing the re-enrollment application for your student(s). NOTE: You cannot re-enroll on the PowerSchool app; you will need to use a browser.

Pay Your Student’s Re-Enrollment Deposit

These fees have already been assessed in PowerSchool. Deposits are nonrefundable and will be applied to your student’s 2022-2023 student fees. You may pay online (preferred) via our RevTrak fee payment system, or by phone or in person in the front office during business hours. If you are currently on a fee waiver, the re-enrollment fee has already been waived.

The deadline to re-enroll for the 2022-2023 school year is Thursday, December 2nd. This allows us to plan for the number of open spots we can offer to new students in our enrollment lottery in February. For the past several years, our wait list has far exceeded the number of seats available at Maeser, so we want to be sure your Maeser student has a spot reserved for next year!

If you have questions, please email our registrar at registrar@maeserprep.org.

Capital Campaign: Fundraising Chair

The Maeser Board of Directors is searching for a Fundraising Chair to spearhead our capital campaign to build our Auditorium. If you have experience and are interested, please send inquiries and resume to jason.dodge@maeserprep.org. Additionally, if you would like to serve on this committee, please send an email of interest to jason.dodge@maeserprep.org and/or cynthia.shumway@maeserprep.org.

Middle School Thanksgiving Feast

The Middle School will be holding a Thanksgiving Feast on Friday 19th from 12:00-1:30pm. All middle school students are invited to attend and their entrance fee is a donation to the food bank. The food bank is currently asking for cereal (bags or boxed), oil, condiments, and canned fruit or beans (not green beans, but all other types).

NHS-Sponsored Food Drive

The National Honor Society will be collecting canned goods and non-perishable items for The Utah Food Bank leading up to the Thanksgiving break (November 15-23).

Each Socratic class will be competing against one another for the chance to win a classroom pizza party. Please have students drop off their items to their Socratic class, where members of the NHS will collect and track each Socratic classroom’s contributions.

Winners will be announced after Thanksgiving and the date of the pizza party will be announced at a later date.

New NHS Members

Congratulations to all students recently selected to participate in the National Honor Society! The induction ceremony will be held at KGMPA on November 29th at 6 PM in the cafeteria. A light reception and NHS member induction will take place that evening.

Schoolwide Science Fair

The School Wide Science Fair will be held virtually this year. Students must make a video (YouTube is preferred) about their science project and submit it to the competition by December 1 at midnight. This is the link to submit their project and video to the school science fair: 2021 School Science Fair Sign-Up.

Questions? Ask your science teacher or Mrs. Hansen.

SENIORS: Order Your Graduation Supplies!

Jostens is requesting that all seniors order their graduation supplies before December 15th in order to avoid shipping issues. Supplies include cap/gown/tassel and can be purchased online at Jostens.com.

Uniform Policy Reminder

One of the best things about Maeser is our unique school culture. That school culture stems from our beginnings in a renovated bowling alley. The feelings of safety, friendship, intellectual stimulation, and even nerdiness are probably among the reasons you chose to send your student to Maeser. Maeser culture is different from other schools, and it requires a lot of effort on the part of students, teachers, parents, coaches, and administration to keep that culture in place.

One of the simplest ways to maintain our school culture is the school uniform. It’s also one of the easiest ways to chip away at that important school culture. We realize that many students may not fully understand the uniform policy, so here are some important reminders.

Maeser’s school uniform is designed to help students prepare for the challenging and rewarding task of learning. At Maeser, education is a serious matter, and students should treat it so. Putting on a school uniform each morning is a way to mentally prepare themselves for the important work they’ll be doing at school. When students wear a uniform, they represent something greater than themselves, and they acknowledge their part in that greatness.

Additionally, we want to clarify a couple of points about the uniform:

  • Ties are required on full dress days.
  • Hoodies may not be worn under uniform polos.
  • Long-sleeve undershirts may be worn under uniform polos — they must be black, navy blue, or white (no patterns).
  • Students may only wear non-approved hoodies and jackets outside the building. Once they are in the building, they need to take their hoodie/jacket off.
  • Shorts and skirts must be modest in length. A good rule of thumb is that shorts/skirt should go at least to the middle of the thigh.
  • Pants and shorts may not have external back pockets (like the kind on jeans).
  • Wide-leg, bell bottom, or jogger-style pants are not uniform approved.
  • All uniform items must be in good repair. This means they can’t be frayed at the bottom, have torn knees, or have holes in them.

We recognize that uniform guidelines can feel restrictive and pointless, but in the 15 years that Maeser has existed, the school uniform has proven to be the single simplest thing students can do to help maintain our school culture.

Moving forward, teachers and administration will be actively enforcing the uniform policy. When a student receives their third uniform violation, we send an email to their parents. When a student receives their fifth uniform violation, they are suspended. If a student receives 10 uniform violations in a year they can be expelled.

If you have questions or concerns about the uniform policy, please contact the middle school or high school Dean of Students. Maeser is a wonderful place that can transform everyone who comes here into a better person. Thanks for your contribution to our school culture!
