Mission
The drama department at Karl G. Maeser Preparatory Academy is consistent with Maeser’s educational purpose to “develop within individuals the values, knowledge, habits, and character necessary to lead a successful, productive, and service-oriented life.” Maeser productions further seek to reflect the values inherent in Maeser’s motto of “Truth, honor, and virtue,” recognizing the differences between classical values of truth, beauty, and virtue as contrasted with the common, vulgar and profane.
About
The Maeser Drama Program is an award-winning, vibrant part of our school’s commitment to classical education, character development, and artistic excellence. Each year, students across grades 7–12 dive into the world of theater through rigorous training, creative collaboration, and high-stakes competitions that build skills in performance, teamwork, and self-expression.
Our program shines on multiple stages: Through these diverse opportunities, Maeser drama fosters not only artistic growth but also the virtues of discipline, integrity, and community that align with our school's mission. Whether on stage, behind the scenes, or in competition, our students learn to perform with excellence and heart.
Utah Shakespeare Festival
Utah Shakespeare Festival: We send a High School Team (grades 10–12) and a Middle School Team (grades 7–9) to compete annually in Cedar City. Students prepare and perform pieces drawn from the Shakespeare canon across various categories. In 2025, our Middle School team claimed 1st place in Duo/Trio Scenes and Sweepstakes, while the High School team earned 1st place in Ensemble Scene and 3rd place in Sweepstakes, continuing our tradition of strong showings at this prestigious event.
Broadway Rocks
This beloved annual tradition brings together over 200 students in a whirlwind weekend of student-led direction and performance. The result is an exciting Broadway Revue-style show featuring songs from across the musical theater repertoire, celebrating talent school-wide.
Fall Play
Kicking off the school year, students audition for our mainstage non-musical (or “straight”) play, which is rehearsed and performed by the end of the first semester, offering a focused exploration of dramatic literature.
Middle School Play: Upperclassmen (grades 11-12) are selected to direct and mentor 7th-9th grade students in an approved production of their choice. The format varies, ranging from full-length plays to collections of short scenes, providing leadership opportunities and hands-on directing experience.
UHSAA Theatre Competition: Students compete at regional and state levels in seven performance events and three technical theatre categories, showcasing versatility in acting, directing, design, and more.
Spring Musical: Our grand finale each year is a full-scale musical production in the spring, where singers, actors, dancers, and crew unite to bring beloved stories to life.
Through these diverse opportunities, Maeser drama fosters not only artistic growth but also the virtues of discipline, integrity, and community that align with our school’s mission. Whether on stage, behind the scenes, or in competition, our students learn to perform with excellence and heart.
