What is an IEP?
An IEP is and individualized education program, which is designed to help students with disabilities be successful in school. Students who are provided educational services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) must have an IEP in place.
Q: Who qualifies for an IEP?
Each student is evaluated individually to see if he or she qualifies for an IEP. There are 13 categories under which a student may qualify for an IEP. They are:
- Autism
- Blindness
- Deafness
- Emotional Disturbance
- Hearing Impediment
- Intellectual Disabilities
- Multiple Disabilities
- Orthopedic Impairment
- Other Health Impaired
- Specific Learning Disability
- Speech or Language Impairment
- Traumatic Brain Injury

Special Education at Maeser
Karl G. Maeser Preparatory Academy’s Department of Special Education is attempting to contact persons with disabilities between the ages of birth and twenty-one in compliance with the Federal law, which mandates the provision of free educational programs for such persons.
If a child is having significant difficulty with vision, hearing, speech, behavior, is experiencing slow development typical for his/her age, physical impairments, or learning difficulty, he/she may be a child with a disability.
If you know of any child whom you feel might qualify for these services, including students suspected of having a disability even though they are advancing from grade to grade, in a private school, homeless, or migrant, please contact the administration or the Special Education office at Karl G.
