Health Notice from UHSAA

Maeser families,

We are sending this message from the UHSAA along for awareness. We do not have any reported cases at Maeser, but we wanted you to be aware of what is happening in the community.

Dear Athletic Directors and Principals,

We are reaching out to make everyone aware of the risk of measles at events sponsored by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). Over the last few weeks, we have identified multiple people who participated in sporting events while infectious, including wrestling, drill, and basketball. We have become aware of people who were likely infected at these events.

To protect our participants and their families, we strongly urge parents to take one of the following protective measures:

  • Vaccination: Make sure your child is up-to-date on their MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. This is the most effective way to keep them on the field, court, or mat without interruption.
  • Precautionary absence: If you choose not to vaccinate your child, we encourage you to consider keeping them from attending school sporting events until measles transmission has stopped.

We want to keep the lights on and the whistles blowing. In Utah communities where measles has been spreading, several school age students have become seriously ill. Some have been hospitalized and many more had days of extremely high fevers and significant weight loss. We do not want to take chances with our young athletes’ long-term health or performance by exposing more students to this virus. High transmission rates can also lead to event cancellations. By taking these steps now, we can help make sure our student-athletes stay healthy and that our season continues as planned.

We appreciate your cooperation and your commitment to the health of the Utah student-athlete community. For more information regarding where to get vaccines, please contact your healthcare provider or local health department.

Please get this information out to your parents so we can keep the extra-curricular activities going through the spring season.

Sincerely,

The UHSAA and Utah Department of Health and Human Services
