With so much information available yet so little wisdom, how can we provide children with a way to be unified in their thinking? This is the question at the heart of the Maeser Prep Academy curriculum. We believe that a true education cannot merely be a collection of facts in different subjects but is rather an interconnection of human experience and wisdom.

Students are often taught to prepare for exams, regurgitate facts from a book and then leave the classroom to never see the subject again. At Maeser, we have developed a classical curriculum to provide our students with unity. We do not present the study of history, English, the fine arts, or mathematics to our students as four separate silos of knowledge. We present these topics as they truly exist: one connected story of human endeavor from the beginning of recorded history to the present.

Our students read primary texts that are a part of history and study what the Great Books have had to say to us in our time, discussing their ideas with our teachers and each other. They will see for themselves that all the great books say the same things. They will understand how these universal truths apply to history, society and our lives.

The study of history in one grade and the study of literature, art, philosophy and mathematics in another grade are all tied together in one big lesson. History will be the study of what happened. Literature will be the study of the people and culture that lived during that time. Art will be the study of how culture is expressed in the art and architecture. These subjects are not separate from history; in fact, they are all a part of history as a whole. Our students will learn how to think for themselves, see the patterns that exist throughout history and the world, and apply what they learn in the classroom to their lives in order to prepare for an exciting future that includes the pursuit of knowledge and truth.

It is through the integration of the study of history, language arts, music, art, government and the physical and earth sciences that the student can truly grasp the interconnections and interdependency of human existence, the world around them, the universe, and God. Through the study of history and the humanities, students learn to discern universal principles of Truth, Honor and Virtue that span all of time, across all of culture, and in all of mankind. They learn how to be good, just, brave, patient, wise and honorable.

Our small class size allows for deep discussions. Our teachers ask students to explain their own ideas and defend them and, equally important, to listen to and discuss other students’ arguments. Our students learn that it is possible to think independently and to have confidence in their own reasoning, and that it is equally noble to listen with humility and respect the opinions of others. It is only in these types of discussions and debates that students will learn not only academic truths, but how to think and how to reason so that they can go forth and serve our nation. We have many students who have graduated and have gone on to receive college scholarships and have attended many colleges and universities with high GPAs and SATs that reflect a 4.0 and 1330 respectively.
